Port Elizabeth cop in hospital following shootout in Zwide


A Port Elizabeth policeman is in hospital after he was wounded on Thursday evening in fire exchange with armed suspects in Zwide. According to the police, his colleague escaped unharmed from the shootout, although a bullet ripped through his clothing.

The shootout happened when the officers, from the Kwazakhele Police Station, were following up on information on a group of suspects.

When the four suspects spotted the officers in the twonship's Ngwekazi Street, they immediately opened fire, prompting the officers to retaliate.

In the end, one suspect was arrested while the other three escaped and are still at large.  

Police believe at least one of the escaped suspects was wounded in the shooting.
