Port Elizabeth gang flees with a huge sum after robbing Ocean Basket

AUGUST 24, 2015

Port Elizabeth police on Monday were investigating an armed robbery after an Ocean Basket restaurant, at Brookes on the Bay on the Port Elizabeth beachfront, was robbed of an undisclosed but huge sum of money in a movie-style operation.

According to police, two men, posing as customers, entered the restaurant at around 11h30 on Monday morning - shortly before the arrival of a Fidelity cash-in-transit guard to collect this past weekend's takings.

While the guard was talking to the restaurant owner, the two men jumped up, drew firearms and ordered everyone to lie on the floor. They then proceeded to take a safe key from the Fidelity guard and emptied the safe of an undisclosed amount of money.

The robbers fled on foot and joined up with a third suspect, who had been waiting outside the restaurant.

A fourth suspect, is believed to have been waiting in a getaway vehicle - a green VW golf, which was seen speeding away from the scene.

No one was injured.
