Port Elizabeth police swiftly arrest three gunmen after shooting incident

Swift police reaction led to the arrest of three suspects, aged between 22 and 30, in Missionvale within an hour after a shooting incident was reported in Bloemendal. The Quantam, the suspects were travelling in, was also confiscated.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel  Priscilla Naidu; "The suspects were detained on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and illegal possession of ammunition. One of the suspects could be linked to a murder case which was reported in December 2015 in Bethelsdorp.

"It is alleged that four people were shot while seated at a backyard shack in Ackeer Street Bloemendal on 21 March 2016 at about 19:50. Two suspects entered the yard and opened fire at the victims. Two people, Clayton Fourie(30) and Cherel Japtha (16) were fatally injured while the other two victims, aged 29 and 27 years old, were taken to hospital for treatment."

Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

Investigations are continuing, but at this stage it cannot be determined whether the incident is linked to gang-related violence.  

The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Celiwe Binta commended the speedy arrests of the suspects and indicated that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring a successful investigation and prosecution. She condemned the shooting and appealed to the community to assist the police in reporting the criminal elements that are instilling fear in the hearts of law abiding citizens. 

“Police visibility will be intensified during this Easter holiday and beyond and those who break the law will be dealt with harshly”, concluded Lt Gen Binta.
