Port Elizabeth woman arrested after six weeks baby found in water canal

Port Elizabeth police were kept busy over the weekend and managed to make several arrests for various crimes in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro area.

Four suspects were arrested for hijacking in Norville Road, Bethelsdorp, on Sunday and are expected in court on Monday.

The hijacking took place along Glendenning Road, Schaurderville, in the Northern Areas on Saturday morning.

In another case, Algoa Park police arrested a woman (42) for child abandonment after a baby (6 weeks) was found in a water canal in Missionvale on Sunday morning. 

The baby has since been taken to Dora Nginza Hospital in a serious condition.

The woman is expected in the New Brighton Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Bethelsdorp police are also investigating a case of murder after a 20yr-old man was fatally shot outside his home in the suburb over the weekend.

The motive of the shooting is unknown and no arrests have been made yet.

Elsewhere, Humansdorp police have opened an inquest after a 31-year-old scrum half passed away on Saturday evening during a rugby match.

In Addo, on Sunday morning, a man (25) was stabbed in the chest by unknown suspects in Main Road.

Investigations are continuing and no arrests have been made.
