Port Elizabeth woman first ever holder of drone license in Africa

JULY 21, 2015

A woman from Port Elizabeth is the first person ever in South Africa and on the continent to be issued with a pilot's license for remotely piloted aircraft systems, commonly known as drones.

The license was issued to Nicole Swart (23) by the South African Civil Aviation Authority about two weeks after remotely piloted aircraft systems were integrated into the jurisdiction of the authority.

Government introduced regulations on 1 July, which are set to manage the flying of drones in the country - requiring operators to be licensed.

Swart is also a holder of the Airline Transport Pilot's Licence and currently works as a Testing Standards Officer at the Civil Aviation Authority in Gauteng.
