Portfolio Committee on Police in Port Elizabeth
Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police is in Port Elizabeth for the next three days and is expected to visit police stations in Gelvandale, New Brighton and KwaZakhele, the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority, and the Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) Project.
Chairperson of the Committee Francois Beukman said the oversight visit, taking place from Wednesday to Friday, is to inspect progress on effective policing methods.
'[The] safety of our people is of paramount importance and should be guaranteed at all times," he said.
The visit comes just when police announced that over the past six months, March-September 2016, Operation Lockdown has made huge strides in cleaning up the streets of crime and gangs in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas, particularly in Gelvandale and Bethelsdorp.
"Many gang affiliates have been convicted on various charges and sentenced to lengthy prison terms, wanted suspects arrested and large quantities of drugs seized," described police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, on Tuesday.
"The intervention team continues to disrupt the thriving drug trade in these areas. Drugs are a contributing factor to many socio-economic problems in the community."
She said that the continuing proactive operations, arrests and confiscations are yielding the desired results.
Over the last week (5-11 September 2016), the following successes were achieved:
84 for Drug-related related offences
4 for Murder
1 for Attempted murder
6 for Possession of suspected stolen property
5 for Attempted hi-jacking
3 for Illegal possession of firearm
1 for Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
1 for Illegal possession of ammunition and homemade firearm
30 Rounds ammunition
4 Stolen vehicles
1 9mm replica firearm
110 Packets of tik
110 Dagga rolls
322 Stilpane tablets
350 Dagga plants
3 Electronic scales
R27 505,80 cash
These successes can be attributed to good planning and coordination between the various police units. The communities are urged to assist the police in ridding their neighbourhoods of crime and criminals. Call Crime Stop 0860010111 or SMS your detailed tipoff to 32211 - your anonymity is guaranteed.
