POST MATCH: Emirates Lions vs Southern Kings

JULY 11, 2016

The Southern Kings put up a gutsy performance against the Emirates Lions in their second last Vodacom Super Rugby at the Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg  on Friday evening.

The Emirates Lions opened the scoreboard early off with a try by Rohan Janse van Rensburg in the 2nd minute of the game, converted by Elton Jantjies, but the Kings then fought back and, after a solid 10 minutes of possession, James Hall found the whitewash. Louis Fouche converted and the teams drew level.

The Kings remained level for the majority of the first half, missing the opportunity to pull ahead after a missed penalty conversion by Fouche in the 23rd minute.

Jantjies broke the tie in the 31st minute with a conversion for the Lions, followed shortly by a try by Andries Coetzee in the 33rd. Jantjies converted, seeing the Lions go into the break with a 10 point lead, 17 to 7.

The second half saw a more energetic Lions team, who put the Kings under significant pressure on defense. Faf de Klerk added the first points of the second half, dotting down behind the posts for the Lions in the 48th minute, converted by Jantjies.

Stefan Watermeyer replied for the Kings in the 53rd minute, with Fouche converting, taking the score to 24 to 14.

Kings vice captain, Shane Gates, got yellow carded in the 56th minute by referee Jaco van Heerden after an official warning for repeated offsides infringements. Shortly after the Lions Franco Mostert broke through the line and dotted down the Lion's 4th try, converted by Jantjies.

Shortly thereafter Van Heerden sent Kings captain Edgar Marutlulle off with a yellow for cynical play. With the Kings down to 13, the Lions Malcolm Marx dotted down the fifth try, with another conversion by Jantjies.

The Lions followed up with a string of substitutions in the 65th minute, before Rohan Janse van Rensburg got in for his second and the Lions 6th try. Ruan Combrinck took over the kicking from Jantjies and added the extra 2 points, taking the Lions to 45.

Sylvian Mahuza broke through the Kings lines in the 72nd minute, with Combrinck adding the extra points, followed shortly after by the Lions last try of the evening by Courtnall Skosan in the 78th minute. Combrinck missed the last conversion, taking the Lions to 57.

The Kings maintained their never say die attitude though and, after a penalty after the final hooter, a great piece of play saw Schalk Ferreira cross the whitewash in the corner on the 82nd minute. Fouche set up and converted the try to take the Kings to 21.

SCORE: (17) 57 - (7) 21.
