Preliminary results: DASO takes NMMU SRC elections

BY CHARL BOSCH - SEPTEMBER 17, 2015

The Democratic Alliance Students Organisation (DASO) has reportedly retained control of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Student Representative Council (SRC), following yesterday’s elections.

According to preliminary reports, the organisation managed to secure 12 out of the available 20 seats as well as regaining control over the main South and North campuses.

“This victory for the DA on the NMMU campus is indicative of growing youth support for the DA in Nelson Mandela Bay. DASO's commitment to caring for students and their issues has been confirmed by this election result,” the party’s Youth Chairperson and former DASO NMMU President, Yusuf Carrim, said in a statement.

“Under the leadership of DASO, the 2015 SRC at NMMU delivered on its election promises courageously, and had implemented real change within the first few months. This provided students with real opportunities to reach their full potential”.

He also added that the organisation would build on its previous successes and focus on a number of issues for 2016, most notably the campus shuttle service, translation of university documents in all languages, a comprehensive bailout fund, and authorising the video recording of lectures.

“DASO has been handed an unequivocal mandate, and will serve the university community out of that mandate. This win at NMMU bodes well for a 2016 victory for the DA and Athol Trollip in the Metro,” Carrim said.
