President Zuma announcing Gill Marcus successor today?

BY TAI CHISHAKWE - OCTOBER 6, 2014

Speculation is rife that President Jacob Zuma might announce the new Reserve Bank Governor on Monday morning after the Presidency announced that he will be holding a special media briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The Presidency, however, did not shed light to the briefing only saying Zuma will be accompanied by the Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene, leading observers to speculate that he will announce Gill Marcus’ successor and touch on the economy.

In September, Marcus revealed she will be stepping down on 8 November. She is South Africa’s ninth Reserve Bank Governor and served for only one five-year term.

On Sunday, the Presidency also announced that President Zuma will this month prioritise the economy and seek to take forward government’s commitment to local government.

In February, Zuma said he would focus on growing South Africa’s economy by about 5% a year to be able to create jobs over his new term as President.
