Prisoner shot, others promptly arrested after escape bid in Mthatha

A brazen attempt at freedom by four hard-core prisoners, who were coming from an appearance at the Mthatha High Court, on Wednesday afternoon ended in the shooting of one and the arrest of the others within hours of their escape.

The prisoners are currently serving life sentences at Wellington Correctional Facility in Mthatha and were appearing in court for pending cases.

According to the police, on arrival at the prison, the four overpowered a Correctional Services officer and escaped.

However, one of the prisoners, Booi Matanzima, 34, tried to hijack a vehicle belonging to a Correctional Services when a fight ensued. He was shot in the lower body and was taken to hospital under police guard.

The other three fugitives, Sthembiso Phakule, 34; Eric Dumezweni, 31; and Sive Dwenga, 25, were arrested not far away from Wellington with a loaded firearm.

They will all now faces more charges of escaping from lawful custody and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition when they appear in court soon.
