Probability Of Load Shedding Is Medium To High On Monday: Eskom

FEBRUARY 23, 2015

The probability of load shedding is medium to high on Monday - dependent on the performance of power plants, Eskom tweeted on Monday morning.  This comes after the power utility, on Sunday said it would cut about 1,000 megawatts of power from the grid following technical faults with some of its generators.

"We have lost a number of our generators and as a result we don't have enough generating capacity," spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said.

He said some of the failed generators were ones that had undergone maintenance over the weekend.

Eskom cancelled plans for rolling blackouts on Sunday morning after power from generating units returned to the grid after maintenance but said the chance of rolling blackouts in the evening remained "medium to high".

Electricity supply constrained as Eskom scrambles to carry out maintenance on its aging generators while bringing new power stations online.

Controlled outages are needed to prevent demand from exceeding supply, a scenario that could overwhelm the national grid and spark a total blackout that could last for weeks.

Eskom had said on Friday it would cut power on Saturday and Sunday in order to carry out urgent maintenance on generators.
