Protest Action: PE motorists urged to avoid Whites Road and Baakens Street

APRIL 28, 2016

Motorists in Port Elizabeth are advised to avoid using Whites Road and the portion of Baakens Street that leads to Vuyisile Mini Square, where City Hall is, as the protest by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Waste Department workers that began on Thursday morning was still on at lunch time.

When RNews visited the area, there were groups of workers resting out of the heat around the square while a number of refuse trucks blocked the two roads.

The workers, who refused to be interviewed, only said they were there to speak to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Danny Jordaan, about several grievances.

Several motorists driving down Whites Road, and who were not aware of the truck bloackade, where forced to turn back and find alternative routes and some did not hide their frustrations - making signs at the workers, who were unmoved.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality offices' doors were shut, with rubbish scattered around, while one SAPS bakkie was keeping an eye on things.
