Protest over Municipality’s failure to pay

BY CHARL BOSCH - FEBRUARY 25, 2015

A group of around 50 SMME building contractors and employees are gathering outside the closed doors of City Hall, demanding that Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipal Manager, Mpilo Mbambisa, pay them outstanding fees owed for the construction of RDP houses.

Speaking to RNews, a contractor, who asked not to be named, said that he and others present, were approached to built houses in areas such as Walmer Township and Khayamnandi on behalf of the Municipality, but that they had not been paid since its initiation last October.

He however could not confirm the exact amount owed to the various contractors, saying that their prices varied, as well as the number of houses built.

He also added that the Municipality’s failure to pay had resulted in many being unable to care for their families while others had to look elsewhere for work. No word has yet been made by the Municipality.
