Public Participation process underway for GO GEORGE tariff

APRIL 26, 2016

On 30 March 2016 the draft tariff increases for George were tabled in Council in respect of property rates and other services charges in order to balance the 2016/2017 Budget.

The GO GEORGE ticket price forms a  part of this standard public participation process regarding municipal tariff increases. GO GEORGE has proposed to Council a tariff increase of 50c per ticket for implementation early in 2017.

The 50c increase was proposed for tickets bought off-bus at vendors, to encourage passengers to buy their tickets before boarding a bus, so as to save boarding time and enable the system to stay on schedule. To reinforce this practice, a further R1.00 increase was proposed for tickets bought on the bus, so that an off-bus ticket will cost R9.00, and one bought on the bus, R10.00.

To make it easier for passengers to buy tickets before boarding the bus, ticket kiosks will shortly be installed in Cradock Street and selected positions, joining the growing number of businesses that already serve as selling points.

The proposed increase for the multi-journey ticket which is valid for 10 trips, is R10, in other words, an increase of R1 per ticket, meaning that 10 trips will cost R85 instead of the current R75.

These proposed tariff increases are only recommendations and form part of the municipal public participation process whereby the Council of George Municipality invites all members of the community to comment or submit inputs in writing regarding the Draft IDP and Budget before or on 6 May 2016.  All comments received then go back to Council who will take the comments into consideration before making their final decision about tariff increases.

Comments can be emailed to the Budget office on and/or written comments can be sent to The Municipal Manager, 2016/2017 IDP/Budget, PO Box 19, George, 6530 or faxed to Fax 044 801 9175

Until such time as a formal announcement is made, the ticket prices for GO GEORGE remain R8,50 for off-bus as well as on-board and R75,00 for a multi-journey ticket (10 trips).
