Queenstown Athletics Club to unify community with a run

Lukhanji Athletics Club in association with Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) and Water and Sanitation Services South Africa (WSSA) will on Saturday host their annual Eyasekasi 6 and 12km run in Queenstown.

Amongst other objectives, the race will be in remembrance of the fallen heroes from Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) who died fighting for democracy.

In its sixth year, the race will start at 6:00am from Indoor Sports Centre, through the streets of Mlungisi Location and back to the Sports Centre.

According to Lukhanji Athletics Club chairperson, Sabelo Jayiya, participants will get to learn more about various historic events.

“This year, as we follow the Mlungisi Liberation Route, we shall remember twenty nine years of the death of Luvuyo Lerumo, an Umkhonto Wesizwe soldier, after skirmishes with the apartheid forces at what was known as the Battle of Breidbach,” said Jayiya.

Jayiya said the race will also mark thirty years (30) of the Queenstown (Mlungisi Location) Massacre.

With the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign approaching, the event will also touch on the socials ills that threaten the communities.

“The run aims at instilling love, friendship, comradeship and unity among families and communities.

“It forms part of the Sixteen Days of Activism, the campaign against abuse of women and children. It is also used as an HIV/AIDS Awareness Programme, fight against substance abuse and also as a weapon to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

People of all ages were encouraged to take part in the run.

Registration forms are available at CHDM offices and Lukhanji municipal offices fees for R20 for the 6km and R30 for 12km.

“We have exciting prizes. T-shirts will be given to the first 180 people to register and the first 180 participants to cross the line will receive medals.”
