REPORT: Kohler-Barnard to appeal axing

Ousted former Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Police, Dianne Kohler-Barnard, has reportedly launched a notice of appeal against her expulsion from the party last week.

In an interview with News24, party Shadow Minister of Justice Glynnis Breytenbach, who also serves as federal legal commission chairperson, said the appeal would commence once the formal reasons had been tabled.

On Friday, DA Federal Chairperson James Selfe confirmed that Kohler-Barnard’s had been fired after her sharing of a post on Facebook last month, that contained the lines, “Please come back PW Botha – you were far more honest than any of these ANC rogues, and you provided far better services to the public”.

Kohler-Barnard has however stated she didn’t notice the line only becoming aware of it after an SMS from DA KwaZulu-Natal leader Zwakele Mncwango. Although she admitted to deleting the post, a screengrab leaked onto twitter to wide scale backlash from users, as well as party leader Mmusi Maimane and Western Cape Premier Helen Zille.

“I have no idea who would choose to share it via Twitter,” she told News24 last month, adding that her decision to share the post on Facebook was “incredibly stupid”.
