REPORT: Majodina has paid back the money

Eastern Cape MEC for Sport and Recreation, Pemmy Majodina, has reportedly paid back a portion of the R18 000 she received in travel benefits for a trip three years, following an investigation by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

According to The Sowetan, Madonsela found that Majodina had demanded a R15 000 increase in travel and subsistence benefits for a trip to New York in 2012 when she was still MEC for Social Development, and that the amount, which when added to the daily allowance for R3 711.25, significantly outweighed the R10 603.58 she was entitled to.

Government spokeswoman, Nomfanelo Kota, reportedly told the paper that Majodina paid the amount back after discovering that she had been overpaid.

In statement shortly after the findings, Congress of the People (COPE) Spokesperson, Dennis Bloem, accused Majodina of “sullying the reputation of the Eastern Cape government and the ANC” and that Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masualle, should consider firing her.

"She must go. Behaviour as disgraceful as hers requires optimal censure,” Bloem said.
