BY CHARL BOSCH - JUNE 30, 2016

Police in Jeffreys Bay have reportedly cited arson as the main reason for the fire that destroyed the Billabong Warehouse on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the local Jbay News, police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli said it had opened an inquest docket that the blaze might have been started on purpose.

“With regards to the outcomes of our preliminary investigation which suggest that there was foul play so the case has now been changed from an inquiry into a case of arson,” he was quoted as saying.

The building, which was reportedly filled with stock in preparation for the town’s annual Winterfest next month, was ravaged by flames just after 23h00, with no injuries being recorded. The exact cost of the damage is just to be determined. Billabong International has since confirmed it all shops at the Billabong Village would remain open with stock already being sourced.
