Residents left angry as NMBM Mayoral imbizo gets canned without notice

MARCH 31, 2016

Frustrated residents from Colchester have accused the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality of pushing them aside after a scheduled mayoral imbizo on Wednesday evening with Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan, was called off without any prior notice.

According to reports, residents started burning tyres and blocking the main N2 highway leading to Port Elizabeth when informed that no officials would be addressing them at the Colchester Community Hall as planned. The protests resulted in large tailbacks with police only re-opening the road after 20h30.

On Tuesday, the municipality announced the cancellation of a similar outreach in Gelvandale with no mention of the Colchester imbizo being made.

In a statement, Democratic Alliance (DA) Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip said the cancellation is prove of the ongoing in-fighting within the ruling African National Congress (ANC) that is preventing the current administration from delivering on its promises.

“After indefinitely cancelling his State of the Metro Address, Jordaan has now ditched his own mayoral imbizo, in the face of a growing list of ANC broken promises in Nelson Mandela Bay,” Trollip said.

“Jordaan is in hiding from the people, with no successes to show for his term of office. Where there are no good stories to tell, it's not surprising Jordaan can't account”.
