Resolution on cellphone price hike complaints expected

APRIL 6, 2015

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) is hoping to get a speedy resolution to consumer complaints over the recent hike in cellphone price plans.

Last week the commission approached the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) over a possible breach in mobile contracts after Vodacom announced plans to increase its subscription fees in May.

Although Icasa says the networks are operating within their licensing conditions some mobile network users say they should be allowed to decide on the hike in fees.

Spokesperson Trevor Hattingh said, “Part of that inquiry is engaging with Icasa to establish the facts and the merits of the situation at hand, because we need to have the facts in our hands before we decide on a course of action.”
