Rhodes University student dies in tragic residence fire


A student from Rhodes University passed away on Wednesday night after a tragic fire engulfed their residence along Milner Street in Grahamstown.

Firefighters found the body of the male student, believed to be in his twenties and who cannot yet be named, from the home, whilst five other male students escaped the fire unharmed.

Grahamstown police spokeswoman, Mali Govender, told the media that an inquest docket has been opened and police forensic experts from Port Elizabeth were on their way to investigate the cause of the fire.

The student was originally from Durban and the university is still waiting for his parents to arrive before releasing further details.

The five students, who escaped the fire, are currently receiving counselling from the Rhodes University’s Counselling Centre.
