Rising Star SA Athletes Undergo High-Performance Training With Endurocad

Distance-running and endurance sports academy Endurocad, which aims to offer a complete suite of services to support the development of talented young South African distance runners, held a very successful high-performance skills, assessment and training camp in Stellenbosch in October attended by 23 athletes from across the country.

The attendees, who were selected following rigorous physiological and psychological assessments, included 15 athletes from Gauteng, three from Durban and five from the Western Cape. During the four-day programme, they attended workshops on finance, injury prevention, strength training, drugs and nutrition, a self-defence course, and a “me as an enterprise” presentation.

Speakers who shared knowledge and wisdom included Endurocad’s ambassador, Olympic medallist and multiple record holder Elana Meyer; sports psychologist Henning Gericke, the man credited with helping the Springbok rugby team claim the World Champions title in 2007 and mentally prepare Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh; South African dream mile athlete (sub 4 minute mile) Jacques Jansen van Rensburg; and mountain-biker, runner and local community activist Songo Fipaza.

The participating athletes were Kabelo Malume (SA junior 10 000m champion and SA team to 2016 World Track Championships in 10 000m), Ikageng Gaorekwe (SA junior cross-country champion 2016), Caleb Beukes (SA U17 cross-country champion 2016), Collen Mulaudzi (SA students 10km cross-country champion 2016), Onkobetse Sebola, Thabang Matiwane, Vuyisil Tshoba, Jeromy Andreas, Sipho Mbanjwa, Nicole Louw (SA schools U15 1 500m champion 2016), Yandiswa Shange (SA clubs U16 cross-country champion 2016), Chery-Lee Schoeman (SA schools U17 cross-country champion 2016), Cornelia Joubert (SA team to World Half Marathon 2016), Lethabo Magoga (SA schools and SA clubs 2 000m steeplechase champion), Thobile Vilakazi, Happiness Mkhize, Anthony Timoteus and Merlin Klaaste.

The first academy of its kind in Africa, Endurocad’s partners include the Stellenbosch Sports Academy (SAS), Investec Asset Management, adidas, Virgin Active, Vital Health Foods, Discovery Vitality, Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Western Cape Government, Tsogo Sun, Gallo Images, Health Q, University of Stellenbosch Sports Science Department, Community Chest, the Graham and Rhona Beck Foundation, and Sanlam.
