Rossi starts season with victory

BY CHARL BOSCH - MARCH 30, 2015

Seven times MotoGP World Champion, Valtentino Rossi, scored his 83rd victory in motorcycle racing’s premier division after winning yesterday’s session opener at the spotlight lid Losail International Circuit in Qatar.

Starting from eighth on the gird, the Yamaha rider picked his way through the field before swopping places in a cut-and-thrust battle with the Ducati of race leader and fellow Italian, Andrea Dovizioso, who finished a close 0.174 seconds behind at the line.

“In the last three seasons I always rode solid races and arrived on the podium but to come back with a victory is another thing,” Rossi told motogp.com

“I am so happy because we suffered a lot during the practices and also the tests, but we worked very well for the 22 laps race and I was very strong”.

Dovizioso’s teammate, new signing Andrea Iannone, completed an Italian podium clean sweep by finishing ahead of Rossi’s teammate, double world champion Jorge Lorenzo, and defending champion Marc Marquez.

Having qualified third behind his Repsol Honda teammate Daniel Pedrosa and Dovizioso, winner of last year’s first 10 races Marquez, had to fight his way back-up after running wide at the very first corner and dropping to last.

“We should be happy because we have salvaged eleven important points, when we could easily have left here with none,” Marquez said after the race.

“The positive that I'll take from today is that we rode at a similar pace to the lead group. In Austin we will continue to work hard, with an even stronger desire to do well”.

Pedrosa eventually netted sixth place ahead of British riders Carl Crutchlow (Honda) and Bradley Smith (Yamaha), with the Yamaha of Spaniard Pol Espargaro, and the Ducati of Columbian Yonny Hernandez completing the top 10.

The next round will take place at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas on April 12th.
