#RUReferenceList: Violence breaks out at Rhodes, students arrested

APRIL 20, 2016

Violence broke out at Rhodes University on Wednesday morning when Grahamstown police attempted to break up the ongoing protests by students over sexual violence at the institution.

The police reportedly arrived in five vans and ordered the students to disperse after which tensions rose and the police fired teargas and rubber bullets as the protesters fled. This is while Rhodes University Vice Chancellor, Professor Sizwe Mabizela, reportedly pleaded with the officers to stop shooting at the students.

A rubber bullet used at the protesting students posted on Twitter by Rhodes student, Aphiwe ‏@AphiweNzuza

Several students arrests have also been arrested, probably for public violence.

While the detained are at the local Joza Police Station, students and supporters began gathering at the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court in solidarity with the arrested.

The Rhodes Law Society and Legal Resources Centre is understandbly going to represent the arrested students while protest leaders have begun to organise collections for their bail money and food.
