SA Ambassador to Germany confirmed new Chancellor at Fort Hare

FEBRUARY 11, 2016

South Africa's ambassador to Germany, Reverend Makhenkesi Arnold Stofile, has been confirmed to be the next Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare. According to the university’s vice-chancellor, Dr Mvuyo Tom, Rev Stofile is expected to officially take over the reins in May during the university’s graduation ceremonies.

The University of Fort Hare is based in a small town called Alice and has satelite campuses in Bhisho and East London.

Speaking at the University of Fort Hare's centenary celebrations this week, Dr Tom credited the Reverend, who is also a former Sports Minister, for leading the fight against a proposed amalgamation of Fort Hare with Rhodes University, which is based in Grahamstown.

“We’d like to thank those who fought for Fort Hare not to be amalgamated with any other institutions when the size and shape debate started in South Africa. When Prof Kader Asmal came to announce, and I’m saying this guardedly, he didn’t say negotiate, he said announce that Fort Hare would stop being Fort Hare,” Tom said.

“Former premier Stofile looked at him and said: ‘Prof Asmal, do you know what you are saying?’ The rest is history I won’t go into it,” Tom said to loud applause.

He also thanked the founding fathers of Fort Hare, the early students and African struggle heroes, who put it on the map.

“We are now an iconic African university.”
