SA Navy deployed to Mozambique

JANUARY 15, 2015

The South African Navy on Thursday morning deployed a team to assess the situation and the exact aid requirements in flood-stricken areas in the Zambezia province in Mozambique.

The deployment follows a request from the Mozambican government for assistance.

Reports say that eight people have died and thousands of people have been displaced due to flooding in the Zambezia and Manica provinces. The floods were sparked by heavy rains over the weekend.

Forty-eight people have died in the floods in neighbouring, Malawi.

Speaking on SABC Radio’s AM Live, Navy’s Captain Jaco Theunissen, said they are sending in Oryx medium transport helicopters, 12 navy divers as well as medical personnel from the South African Military health Service.
