SABC dismissals unlawful - Davis

Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Communications, Gavin Davis, has said that the party will take legal action after the dismissal of two SABC board members yesterday.

In a statement, Davis said the broadcaster’s Board of Directors had no legal authority to remove Ronnie Lubisi and Rachel Kalidass form their positions without the approval from the President. No reasoning for their sacking was provided with the broadcaster merely stating that it had already informed its stakeholders about the decision.

“The unlawful removal of these Board Members strengthens the perception that they are being purged for voting against Minister [Faith] Muthambi’s appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng as SABC Chief Operating Officer,” said Davis, referring to an email send by the Minister last month in which she asked certain members to motive why they should not be fired.

“The only way to undo the perception of a purge is for the Communications Portfolio Committee to assess the allegations against these Board Members and, if there is prima facie evidence of wrongdoing, conduct an open and fair inquiry”.

Davis, who has embroiled in a war of words with Muthambi since Motsoeneng’s appointment, said that the party will discuss the matter with Communications Portfolio Committee Chairperson, Joyce Moloi-Moropa, as well as last week’s removal of another member, Hope Zinde.
