SANBS urges public to donate blood

MARCH 30, 2015

The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) are currently desperate for units of blood, and are urging the public to go and donate, especially with the Easter Weekend approaching.

SANBS Spokesperson, Vanessa Raju, has said that they need to collect at least 3 000 units of blood per day, in order to keep up with demand.

"As of Friday our blood collection has dropped significantly and we have a very limited blood stock available in the country which is less than half than we need. We need to be at a level of five days stock at any given time and the impact comes around with the fact that we are not collecting thousand units of blood a day,” Raju said.

“Blood donation needs to be made a priority.”

"So, please we really urge the public to get involved to find time over this Easter weekend or during the week to make it a priority as these blood donations is usually required especially over the holiday period,” she added.
