Sarah Baartman District host of closure of ‘16 Days of Activism’ in the Eastern Cape

NOVEMBER 25, 2016

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is an international awareness campaign. It takes place every year from the 25th of November to the 10th of December. The period includes Universal Children’s Day and World AIDS Day.

The Sarah Baartman District Municipality has been identified to host to the provincial event in Ndlambe Local Municipality at Kenton on Sea on the 10th of December 2016.

This year’s 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign is significant because many milestones are being commemorated. The year 2016 marks 62 years since the signing of the Women’s Charter on 17 April 1954 in Johannesburg, while it also marks 22 years of freedom and democracy in South Africa and 18 years since the start of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign.

South Africa adopted the campaign in 1998 as one of the intervention strategies towards creating a society free of violence. The campaign continues to raise awareness amongst South Africans about the negative impact of violence against women and children (VAW&C) on all members of the community. This year the campaign will be held under the theme: “Count Me In: Together Moving a Non-Violent South Africa Forward”.

In the lead-up to the closure of the campaign, the Sarah Baartman District Municipality will convene a series of dialogues on violence against women and children in order to zoom in on the problem, discuss the causes and find appropriate solutions.
