Sarah Baartman District Municipality to launch name with Heritage Day festivities in Hankey

SEPTEMBER 9, 2015

In celebration of Heritage Day, the Sarah Baartman District Municipality will officially unveil its name as part of a ceremonial launch in Hankey, in the Kouga Local Municipality, on 24 September.

The municipality, which was formerly known as the Cacadu District Municipality, was gazetted as Sarah Baartman just over a year ago, completing a process that started back in 2012.

“There is a lot of history surrounding Sarah Baartman and since her grave is located in our district, the debate was, why don’t we recognise her?” Sarah Baartman District Municipality Speaker, Deon de Vos, said.

“We consulted with a number of municipalities, communities and council members for over a year about the name change, and received overwhelming support in favour of it. While we may not be able to address the injustices she suffered, this is a small way of paying tribute to her as well as the Khoi and San communities in our district”.

The event, which will start with a number of cultural celebrations ranging from sport and music items to a street carnival on 23 September, will be capped off with the official name unveiling the following the day. Local community involved will further be expended with the hosting of a social dialogue on the 23rd.

Notable distinguished guests expected at the event include Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle, Provincial MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Pemmy Majodina, Sarah Baartman District Municipality Executive Mayor Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana, local councillors, mayoral community members and mayors from the district’s nine local municipalities.
