Sarah Baartman Municipality’s Mandla Neku visits the USA for an International Leadership Programme

SEPTEMBER 1, 2014

The Sarah Baartman District Municipality’s Technical Advisor for HIV prevention, Mandla Neku, was nominated earlier this year to attend the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in the United States from the 11th of July until the 2nd of August.

Representatives from twelve African countries were nominated for the programme – and Neku was the only South African to receive an invitation.

“IVLP builds mutual understanding between the United States and other nations through carefully designed and professional visits to focus on public health,” said Neku. The programme is currently undertaken in four states in the USA.

“During the visit, we were introduced to the role of Federal, State, and Municipal government agencies and Non-Government Organisations responsible for developing and implementing national and grassroots public health programs for urban and rural populations,” he described.

He said that they were taught about public health preparedness and response, health education, public awareness strategies in health, safety and illness prevention as well as health facility and patient care management.
