Save water: Water levels in Nelson Mandela Bay dams drop to 82.8%
The situation is probably not yet critical, but water levels in the five dams supplying the Nelson Mandela Bay are falling. Figures released this week by the municipality show that the Metro's reservoirs, which started the year at an average 100% full, had now dropped to an average of 82.79%.
Since, we are only in the fourth month, this does not make a good prospect if the drought experienced across the country persists.
The biggest drop has been witnessed at the Loerie dam (the smallest dam), which was virtually full at the start of the year, but now stands at a low 21.38% full. Below is the latest figures;

- Impofu dam: 90.41%
- Loerie dam: 21.38%
- Groendal dam: 87.03%
- Average all: 82.79%
Local residents are encouraged to do all they can to conserve water and to report leaks to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as experts have warned of a general water crisis facing the country as a whole.
Elsewhere in the Eastern Cape, there are mixed fortunes with some dams drying out and others holding on.
Combined, all provincial dams are 73.7% full - at this time last year, the dams were 81.3%.
