Search for missing 7 year-old Uitenhage girl ends in tragedy


The search for a 7 year-old Uitenhage girl, who was reported missing on Saturday, was called off at midday on Monday after Port Elizabeth police found her body lying in an open field near Struanway, Port Elizabeth.

According to Port Elizabeth police, the deceased girl was walking with her friend to a spaza shop in New Brighton when she was snatched by an unknown man on Saturday night.

“It it alleged that  the two girls were close to the shop a man approached them and asked the deceased to accompany him. The suspect gave money to the other child and told her to go and buy sweets and walked away with the deceased girl,” said police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, told RNEWS.

He added that the other girl went back to the deceased's home and reported the what happened to the deceased's grandmother and a case of kidnapping was opened.

“Port Elizabeth police and investigation officers where attending other unrelated matters to the area when they found the body of a girl  believed to be that of the deceased girl lying near struanway Monday afternoon,” said Captain Beetge.

He added that it was not immediately clear as how the girl had died and a medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the manner and the cause of death.

Police are now investigating a murder case and have since appealed to local residents, who might have knowledge of the incident to come forward and assist in their investigation.

“Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect is urged to contact crime stop or the nearest police station,” said Captain Beetge.
