Search is on for SABC Group CEO: Minister Faith Muthambi
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has appointed an executive search company to assist the Board with the filling of the position of Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) with a suitably qualified and experienced individual, says Communications Minister Faith Muthambi.
The Minister was responding to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) questions for written reply on whether the vacancy of the GCEO of the SABC has been advertised since the conclusion of the out of court settlement with the former GCEO, Frans Matlala.
Thank You Concert
With regard to the amount budgeted for and spent by the Department of Communications and the SABC on the Thank You SABC Music Concert held on September 10 at Orlando Stadium, Minister Muthambi said: “The Department of Communications did not budget for or spend on the Thank You SABC Music concert.
“The Thank You SABC concert was an initiative hosted and coordinated by Phumelela Group at Orlando Stadium to thank the SABC and the Board for its endeavours to develop local music/content.
“Costs pertaining to the event would have been directed and charged to the organisers by all service providers contracted to the event.”
She said while the SABC was not directly involved, it made a contribution of R2 695 750.50 to the Phumelela Group.
According to Minister Muthambi, the SABC charter obliges the corporation to organise, present, produce, provide or subsidise concerts, shows, variety performances, revenues, musicals in connection with the broadcasting and programme supply services of the corporation or any purpose incidental thereto.
She said in keeping with this obligation, the SABC has identified key events that are aligned to this obligation, as well as those events that have the potential of retaining and growing audience share by meeting the needs and expectations of multicultural mass and niche audiences in all official South African languages.
“Furthermore, the 90/10 strategic decision by the SABC compels the SABC to escalate its local content measures and provide a much wider variety and cross cultural palate of content that reflects the South African landscape,” she said.
Regarding the names of sponsors or partnerships for the music concert, Minister Muthambi said these would have been sought by Phumelela Group as the organiser of the event.
Spending on advertising
The Minister was also asked about the money the department and all entities reporting to her spent on advertising on the African News Network (ANN7), SABC television channels and radio stations, national commercial radio stations, community television and radio stations in the 2015/16 financial year and this current financial year.
Minister Muthambi said the department spent R958 689.84 on the New Age Business Briefing in May this year.
She said the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) did not advertise on ANN7, SABC television channels and radio stations for the financial year 2015/16 and the 2016/17 financial year.
She said the GCIS did not advertise on SABC radio stations in the 2015/16 financial year, and has only spent R964 782 in the 2016/17 financial year.
The Minister said no amount was used for advertising on national commercial radio and television stations in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 financial year.
With regard to community television, she said a total of R59 776.80 was used in the 2015/16 financial year. A total of R2 755 595.75 was used on community radio stations for the 2015/16 financial year and a further R778 551.49 was used for the 2016/17 financial year.
