SHOCKWAVE Part 3: Minister’s statements contradicting themselves - Davis

BY CHARL BOSCH - JANUARY 14, 2015

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow Minister for Communications, Gavin Davis, has hit back at Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, claiming that the her statement on ministerial interference within the national broadcaster, contradicts her earlier report that she had nothing to do with the sending out of suspension notices to certain SABC board members.

A spokesperson for Muthambi earlier today rejected claims made by Davis that the minister had written to members requesting reasons as to why they should not be suspended before January 15th.

“Today, the Minister says that the SABC’s Memorandum of Incorporation mandates her to “play an oversight role” and to “interrogate the conduct of Board members”. Furthermore, she states that any correspondence between her and Board Members is “private and confidential,” Davis said in a statement on the DA’s website.

“This is a tacit admission that the Minister has indeed written to certain Board Members regarding their conduct and continued employment at the SABC.”

Davis said that the party continues to uphold the view that Muthambi is acting unlawfully and that her “sole reliance on the SABC’s Memorandum of Incorporation / Articles of Association to interpret her role vis-à-vis the SABC Board is problematic”.

He also added that the party stands by its call for Muthambi to appear before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications, and that a submission has already been made to its Chairperson, Joyce Moloi-Moropa.
