Shooting of police officers in Zwide condemned, public asked to help locate suspects


Eastern Cape Police on Friday strongly condemned the attack on two on-duty KwaZakhele SAPS members on Thursday evening, along in Ngwekazi Street in Zwide, Port Elizabeth.

"Warrant Officers Ewald Els (40) and Jakobus Botha (42) were following up on information about suspects with firearms in public view," the police said in a statement.

"Police noticed the four (4) suspects on the street and while searching them, one suspect drew a firearm and started shooting at the police. Police retaliated and a shootout ensued.

"Warrant Officer Els was shot in the upper body and has been admitted at the local hospital in a stable condition. WO Botha was unharmed in the shooting."

While one suspect was arrested, three others escape - and one of the escapees is believed to be wounded.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Celiwe Binta, urged local police not to be deterred "by these acts of villains".

She further condemned the attack on the members and requested anyone with information that could lead to the arrests to come forward.

“SAPS calls upon law abiding citizens to pledge and demonstrate through actions, that as society you shall endeavor to also protect our Law Enforcement members and officials against criminals,” she concluded.
