Sidwell shop-owner fights off armed robbers, two in custody

Two suspects are expected in court on Monday after they were arrested on Saturday morning for armed robbery by Port Elizabeth police and armed response.

"At about 07:20 this morning [Saturday], a 31-year-old shop owner was held at gunpoint by two suspects, who entered his shop in Gould Street, Sidwell, Port Elizabeth" the police said.

"The shop owner was able to fight off the suspects and he immediately pressed the panic alarm and within minutes armed response and police arrived.

"The suspects, both 25 years old were apprehended by members of the K9 Unit and Flying Squad."

A 9mm pistol was also seized.

The suspects are alleged to be from New Brighton and were detained on charges of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.
