Significant increase in the number of containers handled at Ngqura

The number of twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) containers handled by the Port of Ngqura increased by 592 819 between 2009/10 and 2013/14 according to figures made available today by Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

The figures show that in 2009/10 the port handled a total of 120 487 with the number having increased to 713 306 by 2013/14.

TNPA’s breakdown on the numbers shows that between 2009/10 and 2013/14 the number of TEUs handled for transhipment increased from 77 295 to 384 244.

The Port of Ngqura is being position as the primary transhipment hub for Southern Africa.

With regard to the Port of Port Elizabeth, TNPA says that in the 2012/13 financial year the port handled 5 157 700 tons of manganese, and 5 913 291 tons, including skips and skiptainers in 2013/14. The manganese facility is being relocated to Ngqura and the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) along with the tank farm.

Port Elizabeth also handled 129 780 automotives in 2012/13, a figure that had risen to 133 194 by 2013/14.

TNPA plans to expand the automotive capacity of the port following the relocation of the manganese facility and tank farm, with the port being positioned as the primary entry and exist point for automotive industry. getnews.co.za
