Six arrested after high-speed chase in Despatch following Uitenhage shooting

Six suspects were arrested and a firearm seized after a man was shot and injured at Puffin Street in Kamesh, Uitenhage, just outside Port Elizabeth, on Tuesday night, at around 11.45pm. 

According to Sergeant Majola Nkohli, police responded to reports of a shooting in Puffin Street, Kamesh in Uitenhage, and obtained a description of a white minibus with six armed suspects that were allegedly involved in a shooting. 

"Moments later the police spotted a minibus fitting the description driving at high speed in Caledon Street in Uitenhage and gave chase. The minibus was cornered and stopped on the R75, near Azalia Park, in Despatch.

"Police seized the minibus, a 9mm pistol with five live rounds, a backpack with jewellery, a computer tower and three cellphones."

A 35-year-old victim that was shot in the leg and buttocks was sent to a local hospital.

"The suspects, aged between 20 and 34, are to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of presumed stolen property," Nkohli said.

"A motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage, and there is possibility of additional charges that could be brought at the later stage of the investigation."
