Six prisoners steal police van while being escorted to court

JUNE 24, 2015

Six awaiting-trial prisoners escaped after overpowering a police officer while being escorted to court, Limpopo police said.

One of the inmates overpowered the policeman and all six of them made off with the state vehicle.

“In the process six awaiting trial prisoners facing charges ranging from murder, theft, assault and grievous bodily harm escaped,” said police spokesperson Ronel Otto.

The vehicle was later found abandoned 25km from the scene at Tovhohane village, west of Malamulele.

It is not clear why one police officer escorted six suspects alone. But police said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

Police said the sixth suspect has been detained at police station while David Madala Mhlongo, Cliff Sithole, Lucas Siweya, Manuel Simango and Bernard Ndobe are still at large.
