Six suspects expected in court for cycad poaching

SEPTEMBER 28, 2015

Six men, aged between 23 and 30, are expected in the Uitenhage Magistrate's Court today after they were bust in possession of cycads worth more than half-a-million rand along the R-75 just outside Uitenhage on Thursday night.

According to police, the bust was the result of a tipped off from the public about men seen stealing the endangered cycads from Blaauwkrantz farm near Kirkwood.

The men are facing charges relating to contravening the Environmental Affairs Act.

The illegal trade in cycads has pushed the plants closer to extinction while that has made them more valuable on the black market where buyers are willing to pay high prices.
