Soulfully delicious: Ziggy’s Rock & Reggae Bar has an amazing vibe and incredible food

Coming from a farming family, I have been brought up on red meat and love a good steak. Not so long ago, I discovered a restaurant that has now become my go to place for a juicy rump or ‘fall off the bone ribs’. Situated at Pine Lodge in Marine Drive, Summerstrand, Ziggy’s Rock & Reggae Bar is unlike any other place I have been ever since resettling in Port Elizabeth.

On my most recent visit to Ziggy’s, I took my mom, who lives in George and is responsible for meaty cravings, as she was keen to find out more about the place I enjoy so much.

Equipped with a fireplace in the lounge for those cold winter days and an outside deck overlooking the ocean, I could see myself spending many more days at Ziggy’s regardless of the season.

Since it was quite chilly, we decided to sit inside, but chose a spot where we could still have a view of the ocean. Our friendly waiter brought us our menus and returned shortly after with two cocktail menus, as he could see we were there to unwind and catch-up.

We took some time to enjoy the stunning view and catch up on family happenings before ordering our food. All the while, we enjoyed the classic Rock and Reggae music that they play at this establishment - as the name suggests, which added to the island vibe atmosphere for which this restaurant is famous.

While finishing our cocktails, we had a look at their menu. Ziggy’s specialises in tapas, seafood and grills, but my decision was easy – a 300g Rump with Flambéed mushroom sauce and oven-roasted butternut. My mom decided to try their Back Bacon and Avo burger with freshly made, hand-cut fries.

My steak was grilled to perfection and tastefully complimented by the mushroom sauce. The butternut, lightly sprinkled with spices, tasted amazing and was full of flavour. My mom’s burger looked divine and, judging by her empty plate minutes later, it must have tasted great too!

We decided to end off our lunch to Ziggy’s with some Dom Pedros. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. I cannot help but agree with my mom’s words on our way home: “If I ever feel the need for a holiday, I’ll just spend a day at Ziggy’s.”
