Soweto Derby postponed

BY NATALI IVERSON - OCTOBER 27, 2014

The first Soweto Derby match of the season between the Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, which was scheduled for the 1st of November at the FNB Stadium, has been postponed after the death of Buccaneer’s goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa.

Meyiwa, who was also goalkeeper for Bafana Bafana, was shot in his Afro-Pop singer and girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s home on Sunday evening.

Gauteng Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Nkosi-Malubane, said that “two guys entered the house and demanded cellphones, money and other valuables. Senzo tried to protect Kelly because one of the men had a gun pointed towards her.”

Khumalo said that when Meyiwa jumped in front of her, he was shot in the back, with the bullet going straight through his chest.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The match will not happen on Saturday out of respect for Senzo. That's the right thing to do," Chief Executive of the Professional Soccer League, Brand De Villiers, said on Monday.
