Special Cabinet meeting on economy postponed

DECEMBER 18, 2015

A special Cabinet meeting to discuss the country’s economic climate has been postponed, the Presidency said on Friday.

Last Friday, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe announced that a special meeting of Cabinet’s economics cluster would be held to discuss various issues, including credit ratings.

The Presidency said in a statement on Friday that the meeting would now be held in January after the Cabinet lekgotla.

"The Cabinet meeting of 9 December had taken a decision to convene a special Cabinet session on the economy to intensively discuss the impact of the global economic crisis on the domestic economy and review the Nine Point Plan that was announced in the 2015 Sona ahead of the Cabinet lekgotla to be held next month."
The special meeting was announced by Rabede at a post-Cabinet briefing in Pretoria last Friday, a day after the rand plunged due to the appointment of Des van Rooyen as a finance minister, in place of Nhlanhla Nene.

Four days later, Van Rooyen was removed from the post and replaced with Pravin Gordhan.
