Spectators to join marathon celebrations

SEPTEMBER 13, 2016

Offering a festive celebration which showcases the Mother City, supporters are urged to turn out and cheer on runners at the prestigious annual Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on September 18.

Making an impact across the country as the only Silver Label road race in Africa, organisers of the weekend road running festival have called on participants to challenge themselves and challenge their friends at the continent's iconic marathon.

Equally important in the quest for Gold Label status is the public support of an event which focusses on uplifting the local community and using peace in sport to drive positive change.

The marathon is a long personal journey into the very centre of the soul. Marathon runners feed on encouragement to get them over the line. Many are far away from home, visitors to this beautiful city. Organisers encourage all Capetonians to be one of the many enthusiastic ambassadors welcoming and encouraging them. All that is needed is music, dance, entertainment or cheering to make their experience an unforgettable one.

To take part, simply make your way to one of the specially created Sanlam Cape Town Marathon spectator zones:

  • 21.1km: Liesbeeck Parkway [Half-way]
  • 24 km: Rondebosch Common [Opposite Red Cross Children’s Hospital]
  • 27km: Newlands [Outside Newlands Cricket Ground]
  • 30km: Rondebosch Main Road [Outside Nations Café]
  • 32km: Observatory Main Road [Outside Pick ‘n Pay Observatory]
  • 39km: Cape Town Company Gardens [Half way down the avenue]
  • 40km: Bree Street [Length of Bree]
  • 41km: Prestwich Museum [Outside Truth Coffee]
  • 42km: Green Point, Fan-Walk, Somerset Road [Opposite Manos Restaurant]
  • 42.2km: Finish [Green Point A Track]

Says Yegs Ramiah, Chief Executive of Sanlam Brand, "We are immensely proud to sponsor this must-run iconic city marathon for the third year and to be involved in building Africa's Major. As we continue to go for Gold, we invite all Capetonians as well as the friends and family of participants to join us in cheering on the runners at one of these zones as they make their way through the 42.2km route and across the finish line."

Assisting commuters in avoiding heavy traffic, by utilising public transport, the City of Cape Town has made travelling to and from the race far easier by offering some free travel options before, during and after the 42.2km race.

  • A free MyCiti shuttle will be available from the Civic Centre to Stadium, leaving every five minutes (from 05h00), and return trips will run between Stadium and the Civic Centre after the race (from 09h00 to 14h30).
  • MyCiti will also offer three free spectator buses covering the route, with five spots where fans can hop on or hop off:

o   Rondebosch Common

o   Orange Street, Gardens

o   Queen Victoria Street, Gardens

o   Prestwich Museum

o   Stadium Station

For interested supporters who are unable to make it to the race, the marathon contest will be broadcast live from 6.30am on SABC 2 on the day of the race. Live streaming will also be available on the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon website (www.sanlamcapetownmarathon.com)

Aside from the marathon race and Peace 10km run/ walk on the Sunday, the weekend festival also includes Peace Trail runs and a world-class Expo. Held at the Lookout, V&A Waterfront, on Friday 16 September (09h00 to 19h00) and Saturday 17 September (09h00 to 17h00), athletes are able to register and receive their race numbers and goody bags. A range of products will be on sale from the various exhibitors, whilst the food court with its live music will keep runners and supporters entertained.

The Expo will also provide runners and supporters with the chance to take the Run4Change pledge. Open to anyone, not only runners, it provides all individuals with the platform to show their support by making a significant and positive impact on society.
