Eastern Cape police on Wednesday welcomed a harsh sentence handed down by the Zwelitsha Magistrate Court to Zimele Nkumanda, 43, after the court convicted him of raping an 85 year-old woman at Thembeni Location, outside King Williams Town in June 2015.

"Thorough investigation led to the arrest of the suspect immediately after the Police were alerted about the rape. The suspect sexually assaulted the victim from her home at about 20h00 on the night of 03 June 2015," the police said.

"He was arrested on the following day (04 June 2015) and he first appeared at Zwelitsha Magistrate Court on the 05th June 2015.  The investigating officer successfully denied bail and he was remanded in custody.

"He appeared several times at Court and on the 03rd November 2015 he was convicted and  sentenced to twenty five years (25) imprisonment for Rape."

The Unit Commander of King Williams Town Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Major Sandile Mahobe welcome the sentence and hope it will serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of crime.

He commended a sterling work done by the Investigating Officer that led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused.

The suspect was sentenced within six months and this shows a good job done by Detectives on investigating this case,  he added.
