SPY BLOG Part 1: CIA spied on political figures - blog
The State Security Agency (SSA) has said that it will investigate allegations of espionage after a blog site claimed that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had been spying on certain key political figures as well as Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
SSA Spokesperson, Brian Dube, said that the postings on a WordPress hosted site were alarming and that similar investigations would be carried out on other social media platforms as well as.
“The State Security Agency looked at the matter with great concern, as these allegations will impact negatively on our hard-won democracy and will undermine the independence and credibility of our democratic institutions,” said Dube.
Although last updated on February 13th, the blog site alleges that the CIA had been keeping tabs on Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) president Joseph Mathunjwa, as well as former Democratic Alliance (DA) Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko, while at the same time asking whether Madonsela had been appointment to spy on South Africa.
According to an extract from a post dated February 12th 2015, Madonsela is accused of “covering her tracks by using different e-mails to communicate with her contacts” and that she “sends herself messages from different account, including from her own CIA domain account”.
“Madonsela could be an intermediary officer of an extended espionage and subversion network. If this is the case, then she must be really protected,” another extract read.
The latest claims of Madonsela being a spy comes after Deputy Minister of Defence and Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) chairperson, Kebby Maphatsoe, told gathers at the unveiling of a tombstone to a former MK member in September last year, that Madonsela had been on the CIA’s payroll and that she was trying to hijack the ruling African National Congress (ANC) after her investigation into the upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s private Nkandla home.
In a statement, DA Shadow Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, David Maynier, who famously referred to Maphatsoe as an idiot after his comments, labelled the SSA’s called investigation as “bizarre” and that it is merely a way of diverting attention away from the problems facing the department.
“The fact is that ramblings on a blog have been turned into allegations and used as a pretext to launch an investigation which amounts to a state-sponsored political hit designed to delegitimise critics of the ruling party and deflect attention away from the crisis in the State Security Agency (SSA).
“The State Security Agency has clearly become a “Stasi” which is not able to tell the difference between a national security threat and a political threat to President Jacob Zuma,” he said, referring to comments made in the National Assembly on Wednesday, during a questions and answers sessions into the blocking of cellphone signals at Zuma’s State of the Nation Address last month.
Responding to a statement by State Security Minister David Mahlobo on the matter, Mazibuko tweeted, “It's pretty embarrassing that a SA cabinet minister would issue a press statement responding to a false blog post from the lunatic fringe,” while Madonsela wrote, “No point in denying obvious lies as those who want the truth already know it & those who don't want it will ignore it”,
