SPY BLOG Part 2: Investigation a waste of time

BY CHARL BOSCH - MARCH 6, 2015

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, has branded the State Security Agency’s (SSA) decision to investigate a blog alleging that the CIA had been monitoring him as well as other political figures and Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, as a “waste of government resources”.

His response comes after State Security Minister David Mahlobo yesterday announced that the SSA would carry out an examination of all social media platforms, after a blog with the URL, africainteligenceleaks.wordpress.com, claimed that Malema, Madonsela, former Democratic Alliance (DA) Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko, and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) President Joseph Mathunjwa, were spying on the state on behalf of the CIA.

“I have never heard such madness in my life. Those people are clowns. Our biggest problem is that our 'intelligence' is not intelligent, “Malema was reported by Netwerke24 saying, while Madonsela was quoted as saying, “A grade nine pupil could see it is rubbish”, adding that she would be lodging a formal complaint to have the comments withdrawn.

Earlier, Mazibuko, who left the DA last year to further her studies at Harvard University, wrote on twitter that Mahlobo responding to a false post was “embarrassing” while the party’s Shadow Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, David Maynier, said that the SSA’s response was a clear indication of the ANC’s paranoia “as the pressure mounts on President Jacob Zuma”.

“There is absolutely no evidence that any of the individuals named are a threat or potential to national security and therefore they cannot be legitimate targets for the SSA,” Maynier said in a follow-up statement after originally labelling the SSA”s reaction as bizarre.

“The investigation amounts to a state-sponsored political hit designed to delegitimise critics of the ruling party and deflect attention away from the crisis in the SSA.

“What the SSA does not seem to realise is that its legal mandate was recently amended and specifically excludes “lawful political activity, protest, activism and dissent” as set out in the amended National Strategic Intelligence Act,” he said, before adding that the party would take the matter up with the Inspector-General of Intelligence, Advocate Faith Radebe.
