SPY BLOG Part 3: DA denied asking about investigation
Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, David Maynier, has described the turning down of a question to State Security David Mahlobo about the department’s investigation into the so-called spy blog, as bizarre.
Speaking in a statement, Maynier said the party had submitted a letter to Deputy National Assembly Speaker, Lechesa Tsenoli, stating that Mahlobo should come to Parliament and explain the reasons for investigating the blogsite, africainteligenceleaks.wordpress.com, which earlier this month claimed that Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema; Public Protector Thuli Madonsela; Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) president Joseph Mathunjwa, and former Democratic Alliance (DA) Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko, were spying on the state on behalf of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Maynier said that Tsenoli’s refusal of the matter being highlighted during tomorrow’s questions and answers in Parliament, is simply a tactic to avoid the “irreparable damage” the minister has caused to “democratic institutions”.
“The effect of the decision to turn down my urgent question is to “firewall” the Minister from responding to hard questions about the bizarre espionage investigation being conducted by the SSA,” said Maynier.
“There are no other means of dealing with this matter in the near future. The Minister made a public statement about the bizarre espionage investigation, and he should be held accountable for his public statement about the bizarre espionage, in public”.
Responding to the investigation after the blog became apparent, Malema told Netwerke24 that the country’s biggest problem is that our “'intelligence' is not intelligent” while Madonsela, who was accused of working as a CIA plant last year, said, “A grade nine pupil could see it is rubbish,” before adding that she would be launching a complaint against the SSA.
