SPY BLOG Part 4: Madonsela fears suspension

BY CHARL BOSCH - MARCH 18, 2015

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has said the State Security Agency’s (SSA) decision to investigate the controversial Africa Intelligence Leaks blog site, alleging her to be CIA plant, hints at a deeper motive to have her suspended.

“What we would have expected is to investigate the crime behind the allegations because you really don’t need to be rocket scientists to see that these are shenanigans in an attempt to slander people,” she told Eyewitness News.

Madonsela, who previously called the blog rubbish when it was first picked up on March 6th, said that the SSA’s decision to continue with the investigation is shocking, and that it might be done to give President Jacob Zuma a reason to dismiss her.

“I think that the motive was to make me ask for an investigation and then for the president to have a reason to request me to go on a sabbatical or for the president to suspend me pending an investigation.

“We look at things and if it's not accompanied by anything we could work with, we don't follow it,” she said, adding that the uproar was merely an attempt to undermine her office.

Last year, Deputy Minister of Defence and Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans' Association chairperson, Kebby Maphatsoe, accused her of working for the CIA in an attempt to cast doubt about Zuma, following her report into the upgrades at his private Nkandla home.
